Berkshire West CCGs reach final of EHI “digital NHS trust or health board of the year” awards

The four Berkshire West CCGs have reached the final of the EHI Awards 2014 in the "digital NHS Trust or health board of the year" category.

The award seeks to find NHS organisations that have used technology effectively to provide a better patient experience, reduce costs, speed up services, mitigate risk and to make other improvements.

The Berkshire West team was praised for bringing together clinicians, IT professionals, practice managers and CCG governing body representatives who meet regularly across sector and organisational boundaries to drive the digital agenda forward. Known as the Information Management and Technology board (IM&T), members collaborate to ensure that digital technology is used effectively to deliver shared commissioning goals. The Berkshire West CCGs have been supported by its Commissioning Support supplier NHS Central Southern CSU, who provide extensive IM&T skills and expertise for the programme.

Working as a dynamic team, the CCGs have taken on all technological challenges including access, sharing of records and infrastructure over the past 12 months. This has led to improvements in getting the right information instantly to GPs to ensure that their patients get the right treatment. Equally the CCG has been working closely with organisations across Berkshire West including Berkshire Healthcare Foundation Trust, Royal Berkshire Foundation Trust and the three unitary authorities to improve information sharing between systems. This will mean the patient only needs to tell their story once.

Katie Summers, Operations Director, Wokingham CCG and Chief Information Officer for the Berkshire West CCGs, said: "While making the most of today's technology now, the team is also focused on the future. It is driven by a vision of a health and social care system where patient information flows seamlessly and securely, helping the integrated health and care system of the future deliver the best care for patients and service users.

"Combining high-quality clinical engagement and technical expertise, the team's ability to deliver innovation at pace across a variety of very different organisations is delivering real benefits to patients in Berkshire West."

The EHI Award winners will be announced at the final on Thursday, 9th October.
